Get to Know Caitlin Milligan, Au.D

Where are you from and how did you come to practice in Anchorage?

I was born and raised in the interior of Alaska in a small town called Delta Junction.  I knew I wanted to return to Alaska after finishing my education, so I strove to incorporate clinical rotations during my training that would help me become proficient in multiple specialties, many of which were not available in Alaska previously.  After graduation, my husband and I were so excited to return to Anchorage, and ACENT seemed like a great place to begin my career.

What about audiology first peaked your interest?

I took several science courses during undergraduate study, and neuroscience was by far the most captivating.  I knew I wanted to further my knowledge and have a career rooted in this discipline.  Audiology is extremely “neuro heavy” as everything audiologists evaluate and treat has afferent and efferent pathways to and from the cortex.  The further immersed I became in my audiology courses, the more my love for this field grew and it seemed like a natural fit for me professionally.

Where did you do your training?  What were some of your highlights during that time?

I earned my Doctorate of Audiology at Pacific University and completed a residency at the Portland VA Medical Center and the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research.  As a result of both my educational background and professional training, I am very passionate about research, and employing evidence based practices with all of my patients.  During residency, I enjoyed working firsthand on research projects that included electrophysiology measures, auditory processing evaluation, and tinnitus management and intervention.  I was very fortunate to have some of the most incredible mentors  during that time and their efforts fostered significant professional growth.

What are your specialties?

I have specialty training in electrophysiology measures, vestibular assessment, tinnitus management, cochlear implant evaluation and programming, auditory processing disorder assessment, amplification services, and general audiology diagnostics.

What advice would you give to someone having hearing difficulty, but are afraid to make an appointment?

Don’t wait!  The sooner you come in the better.  Research has shown time and again the sooner a person begins necessary intervention, the more likely they will benefit from said intervention.

Tell us about your recent award.

I was recently named the American Academy of Audiology 2020 Scholar Award Recipient. I was very exited to receive this award because it is a national recognition and contributes to my overall commitment to furthering my knowledge base and staying up to date on the latest technologies, interventions, and treatments to best serve my patients.

“The Academy Scholars we honor in 2020 demonstrated a commitment to professional development by participating in 50 hours or more of continuing education throughout 2018 and 2019. These individuals showed remarkable dedication to the field of audiology and commitment to continued professional excellence.”
