Tonsils and adenoids are part of the body's immune system and are likely important in protecting the body against infection early in life. The two main reasons to consider removal of tonsils and adenoids are breathing difficulties due to excessive enlargement or frequent illness due to chronic infection. Enlarged adenoids can also play a role in ear or sinus disease. The ACENT ear, nose, and throat specialists in Anchorage have decades of combined experience performing diagnosing and treating disease of the tonsils and adenoids.

Surgery of the tonsils and adenoids remains one of the most common surgeries performed in children, but adults who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea or recurrent throat infections may also benefit from surgery.

Anyone with chronically inflamed, enlarged, or infected tonsils or adenoids should be examined by a ear, nose, and throat specialist. Please request a consultation online, or call (907) 279-8800 to schedule an appointment with a member of the ACENT team. For our Homer and surrounding patients, please call (907) 235-0310.

Our highly-trained providers look forward to meeting you and answering all of your questions.

  • Tonsillectomy – Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes between 10 and 30 minutes.
  • Adenoidectomy – Adenoidectomy requires a general anesthetic and takes between 10 and 30 minutes.

Recovery from a tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is more difficult than recovery from adenoidectomy alone. Pain thresholds vary, but children typically need a week to 10 days to recuperate. Recovery typically takes longer for adults. All patients receive postoperative medication to manage pain.

Recovery from adenoidectomy alone is quick and many patients return to normal activity within a day of surgery. Adenoidectomy as a stand-alone procedure often requires no pain medication.
